Recently I’ve been asked many times where we get our OFA certifications done. This post is geared to breeders who need to finish all their certifications before they breed and live in the Southern California area. So if you have no plans to breed, then this post is probably not for you.
The “big four” as I call them are the hips, elbows, heart, and eyes. These are the four certifications minimum that any breeder should obtain before breeding. Now I realize, that some dogs are imported and their certifications are often done via other methods such as through FCI or through the Kennel Club standards in the U.K.. In that case it’s a different scenario. In southern California there a not a lot of locations who perform OFA and or PennHIP certifications, but below are a few we have used.
Hips and Elbows
In the Inland Empire there are very few options for OFA. There are a few veterinairans around that still do them, however we’ve noticed that those who don’t do them often generally don’t do them correctly. We always take ours to Dr. Butchko (Michael now owns the practice since the passing of his father). They’ve been doing them for years, and do them daily. Their office is a walk-in basis. I get there when they open in the morning before the mad rush. Their office is very run down. I don’t go there for looks, I go there for their service and price. So don’t be turned away by their location. They are one of the few breeder friendly vets in Southern California. They will be going into their brand new building with 20 exam rooms soon. I can’t wait and I’m very happy for them. I’ve been doing my OFA’s with them for over 10 years. Their phone number is (951) 686-2242. The one problem I do have with them, is that most the time I visit I spend about 3 hours (or 4 and a half) there. I am usually first in line (get there 20 minutes before they open), and they don’t finish with me for 3 hours. They cator to surgeries first. I’ll start experimenting by going at a later time to see if that helps. The last time I paid $336 (February 18, 2020) and included them sending the x-rays to OFA themself.
Another option is Dirk Butchko Pro Vet. This is Dr. Michael’s brother’s clinic. I have been going here for a few other visits, and they have a clean clinic. You can get in and out much faster than Dr. Butchko’s. Their phone number is (951) 354-2185.
If you go the route of PennHIP for the hips, and with an OFA of the elbows I go to Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital. Their phone number is (909) 980-3575. They are in Rancho Cucamonga. I do prefer PennHIP, as it’s more accurate in my opinion. It does however cost more and you have to sedate them to do it ($775). I know a lot of breeders who rather go with OFA over PennHIP, so that is why I offered that information first. Do be careful with Alta Rancho, as they like to charge and arm and a leg for extra things that are not a problem. $500 to treat ear infections with little to no symptoms is outrageous and is easily treated at home.
Another couple golden retriever breeders I know use The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Deb has been highly referenced. Prices are roughly $240. All things considered it is fairly cheap especially if you are in that area. Personally I plan on going here next time since I’ve been spending about 4 to 5 hours at Butchko’s every time.
I do know more veterinarians near the Laguna beach and San Diego that I will add later. My in-laws are using one in Laguna that spends extra time on the x-rays. I’ll update this post as I learn more about them.
Eyes
A new clinic just opened in Upland called Veterinary Ophthalmic Consulting. Their phone is (909) 895-4010. I went there for Jaks’ Eye Certification recheck. The price was around $90. Was very fast and went great.
The Eye certification I used to get done either in Tustin or Upland. The veterinary practice we use is Eye Care for Animals. They do also have a practice in Palm Desert, so you could call them to see if they have clinics for an OFA Eye exam. Their Upland number is (909) 949-9200. Their Tustin number is (949) 733-8271. I have seen that the veterinarian in Upland goes on vacation almost every time we need an exam done. So I did have to go other locations. However, if they are not on vacation, you can get an appointment fairly quick. They generally charge around $77 for the exam. If you have multiple dogs that need to be seen, they do offer discounts on your extra fur members. However, I was recently told that they may not be doing OFA exams anymore. So just clarify if you call.
There is a new a practice called Animal Eye Vet in Murrietta. They just opened last year in 2016. Their phone is (951) 801-6166. I have used them twice now. The vet is really nice, and maybe even a bit more thorough. They charge around $80. They do require you to pay in advance which I do not like. Also, they are generally booked up a month in advance.
Another tip is that at AKC shows, often they will have a specialist on site and perform tests at a cheaper rate. This can help save a few extra dollars if an event is near you. Same thing can go for the heart exam as well.
Heart
Heart, I get our hearts tested in Tustin at VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists. Their phone is (949) 654-8950. They charge $105 (as of February 25, 2020). Their price just recently went up. I really like their vet. She’s really nice and the assistants are all kind to our dogs. Their veterinarian is a Heart Specialist. Completing and exam with her will allow you to receive an advanced certification from OFA. It is possible to receive an exam from a general vet, but the certificate will not be advanced and this process is no longer recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America. I do know another specialist but I can’t recommend them as they are known to intentionally fail every dog on purpose and in the process charge over $500 on unnecessary testing. So do your research before you go somewhere.
Other Exams
There are other exams that you could do and it is not solely limited to the big four. However the big four I consider a must to have done before breeding. DNA testing can be done and in many ways very useful. We do ours at Paw Print Genetics. We’ve done them at other locations, however specifically for Golden Retrievers Paw Print Genetics cover all three forms of PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). Most alternative companies only cover 2 forms. PRA causes blindness, so I do see it very necessary to know if our dogs are carriers of it. Other breeds don’t necessarily carry the same diseases, so you would need to find out which diseases are relative to the breed you are working with and test for those. There are also Thyroid tests you can have done, but that generally can be done at any veterinarian. You just need your vet to fill out the proper documentation.
It is also possible to go to AKC dog shows for your tests. Often many dog shows bring veterinarians to perform some of these tests at their shows. Just look online to see when the next show near you is. Then contact them to see if they will be having any clinics for OFA testing.
We hope this helps out those who live near us. It was difficult for us to find who we could use when we started. Some have already closed and we had to find new people. So it can be helpful if you are new to the area or the hobby by getting a head start with our list. If you are reading this and know of someone who indeed needs to be added to this list, just comment below. We are always looking for great veterinarians
Cost Estimate
I’ve had multiple people contact me on prices and what the estimated cost for everything is, especially for those who breed Golden Retrievers. My estimate is as follows:
OFA of Hips and Elbows: $336
Eye Certification Exam: $90
Submission of Eye Certification to OFA: $35
Advanced Heart Certification Exam: $105
Submission of Advanced Heart Certification to OFA: $15
Estimated Cost: $581
The estimated cost is a general idea of what it will cost to get certification from OFA for the big 4 of Hips, Elbows, Eyes and Heart. Those four are recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America and completing those will get you a CHIC certificate. There are more tests that can be performed that check the patella, thyroid etc. DNA tests to check for ICH/ICT, PRA 1&2, and PRCD generally run around $200. Also, a point to note that you can get a preliminary Hips/Elbow Certification at 1 year, and then you have to do a final at 2 years. So you will pay for that twice, or you can just wait till 2 years of age and pay it once. The Heart Certification can be done at one year of age, and will last for the life of the dog. However, it is possible to do it again if you think there may be a developing problem later on like CDM. Eye certification last for one year and recommended to be done yearly.
Thank You Tim!
You do an awesome job with providing important information.
Congratulations on your newest addition!
Dr. B Will not provide info for OFA testing over the phone, can you shed some light as to how much to expect to pay? It is quite a drive for me.
The last I paid was $330 for hips and elbows to be completed.
I just came across this website and was quite interested. Just thought I’d let you know that Dr Popkin has done over 90,000 OFA xrays. He does far more than anyone in the world and does them digitally at dog shows where most of his clients are anyway. He does lots of Penn Hips as well. And also thyroid, cardiac, shoulders, and Patellas. He can do all of these tests and have you out of the office 15 min after you arrive. He takes care of all paperwork. Hips/elbows is currently $330. He does 300 xrays on an average weekend. He’s been doing this for over 35 years and at dog shows for 12 yr..He works the entire west coast from San Diego to Seattle.
I’m in San Diego, do you have the contact info for Dr. Popkin so I can arrange an appt?
Thanks!
http://showdogmed.com/ is his website. He is based in Santa Rosa, and travels when there are dog shows. So it is difficult to line up a time to get your OFA’s done if there are no shows in your area. My intent for the post was Southern California based vets, so I didn’t add him to my list. Many people don’t want to wait to have their certs done, but if the timing lines up, then great.
I’m a couple of years behind on this post- is tehre anywhere that you can get all tests done in one place?:
Not that I am aware of. Eye specialists and heart specialists in one place is difficult to find. VCA specialists in Tustin does have a heart doctor, and next door is an eye specialist. You could call them and see if they could arrange a way to have them done at similar times, and maybe they could do hips and elbows as well. I doubt that will be possible as the eye specialist you have to book 3 months ahead.
Hi There
Thank you for all the great information! I have a Golden that I want to get all the test for, do you know of any reasonable places in North San Diego ? My vet wanted almost $800.00 for hips and elbows
I know mostly Vets in the Inland Empire and New Port areas. I don’t know many in San Diego. You might make a trek to this Area. ProVet in Riverside is a nicer location, and brother of Butchko. Should be around $300 for both. Prices may have gone up, but I haven’t done them in a while.
Hello,
I am looking for a vet that can do OFA Cert. Xrays without putting the dog out.
Does your office do this?
Please, contact me either way, if you have a contact of another vet that does this, please share information! Thank you very kindly, Catherine B.
Dr. Butchko’s or Provet both do it without knocking them out. I am not a veterinarian myself, I just created a list of those who do it.
